Apulia

Puglia is a region that has always produced a large quantity of Italian wine, particularly red, and for this reason until recently was referred to as the ‘tank’ of Italy.  In the past the regions grape production was characterised by intensive cultivation and technical processing focused on quantity. 

Today following the Sicilian model, a process of re-evaluating the regions wine making industry has been initiated through the exploitation of local grape varieties with which they are achieving good results in the production of high quality wines with an excellent price/ quality ratio.   

The main grape varieties used in area of Lecce are Primitivo and Negroamaro whereas the Bombino Bianco, Nero di Troia, Sangiovese and Montepulciano varieties are used in the area of Bari. 

When people speak of Puglian wine they will always tell you this interesting story.  Far away from the South of Italy, in California, they produce a very famous and popular wine called Zinfandel.  This grape was recently the subject of specialist research which discovered that the origins of the grape infact come from the Puglian Primitivo di Manduria grape variety.  This discovery has created a resurgence in the popularity of this once undervalued traditional Italian wine.
